Merry Christmas to all

I wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas this year. Its been a long bittersweet year for a lot of people. Lots of highs and many more lows! I know we've all been there. But please, at tihs time of year - remember your loved ones, remember my mom. just know they are in heaven looking down at us and are with us in spirit. Celebrating all the while with us. Its hard to feel it many days - but please try. My mom would want us to be happy and remember her joy and smiles and laugh. She would not want us to sit and be sad all the time or remembering that bad times at the end. So - go out and smile and laugh for my mom. have the Friday at 4's that she started at Citizens. If there were anyone in my office or cube land - I'd start that too. unfortunately - very few people are left.

Be thankful for the ones you have with you now. If you are fighting or for some strange reason, can't remember why you don't talk to someone - mend that fence now. You don't know when you will have that chance again! This is the time. Make 2005 a year of change and loving the life and people you do have. Its hard - but do it. I know I cherish as much time as I can get with my family. I want us to be happy and we will be. Heck - we have a cute little boy that will live through mom's spirit and love. He'll start talking about her someday like he was there - so just do that.

sorry for the craziness - not sure what that's about - I just need to have mom remembered - so remember your loved ones. I know many people are struggling with many other issues - so take care of yourselves and live every day like its your last. Don't go to bed mad or angry - always kiss your family good night.

I hope the snow doesn't hit everyone too hard this week - drive careful and ring in the new year!
love,
Gail (and gang)

Dedication, Rolling and sitting

Well we have had a big week! Last Sunday, Nate was dedicated at grandpa Doug's church! It was very special. That is the same place Uncle Marcus and I were dedciated at years ago! We had lots of the family from Michigan there to share in the day (with a few friends added in too). Nate even had his Aunt Jen and Ann from NY here for the special day. He LOVED being with both of them. His aunt Jen and him got along great! He loves her tons and tons.

Today we celebrated the Wilcox Christmas with aunt Darlene and gang. We had a good time. Nate started to roll over from back to front. He still needed a tad assitance, but almost has it. He also was able to sit up with out any assistance holding him up. Well both tasks need a LOT of practice. The sitting up MUST be monitored because he likes to tumble over still. It only lasts a few minutes. But today was the longest. It was just a fun day.

Nate also helped us do some Christmas shopping yesterday. He had fun flirting with anyone and everyone that would take a look at him. He impressed one man so much that he actually gave Nate $1! That was really sweet. WEll this week is a 4 day week for the holiday. We'll be spending lots of time with the family for Christmas eve and day. We'll miss Grandma, aunt Jen and Tj though. Next year!

Better get going - big week at work this week. The Big three are totally pulling all their work out of our plants. So we'll be shutting down much sooner than they ever anticipated. What fun that will be. HOpefully we'll make it through this week! But I"m allowed to look for jobs at work now - so that is good.

Time to get going - both of us are exhausted today. Long and busy weekend.

Big update

Well this will have to be a big update - I didn't realize its been so long since the last post - ops.

Life just has been really busy with the holidays and all that. Nate's doing great - he's enjoying his cereal a lot. He's also adjusted to the soy formula - it seems to be helping! WE haven't given him cold medicine for about a week now! So that is a huge plus! He's happy as can be. He's making new noises of "glee" now. Its cute. I guess he had a belly bustin laugh yesterday at daycare. They had him laying on the floor with another little boy and then suddenly just heard someone laughing! It was Nate! They said it was the cutest thing! WE can't wait to hear it ourselves! But he's just as happy as can be, so that is good.

Last night, we attended a candlelight service to remember mom and grandpa and everyone else. It was really nice. Nate wanted to talk through the whole thing. Craig did take him out to another room - a large empty room. So he realized how his voice can echo Craig said! He was enjoying that new excitement as well! Craig said he was really talking up a storm - very loudly and making all sorts of noises to hear them echo! Too cute.

He's also 5 months old yesterday! Yeah - getting big and out growing clothes left and right. This weekend we are having him dedicated in dad's church! So that will be nice - we are very excited. Craig's sister and "aunt" Ann are coming in for it as well. So this will be a very special event for our family.

Us - doing great. Craig's finally got some interviews going to find a replacement for his job so he can focus on the promotion to manager! That will really help - he's enjoying his job a lot too! My job - well Oxford Automotive finally declared bankruptcy this past week! So life has been interesting and finally coming to an end. They did start laying people off this week -b ut I was told I should be ok - probably till March 31st. That is the deadline -either there will be nothing, or they will sell the operating plants by then. WE hope for the sale. One company is very interested, but slow in making things final. And with this weeks move - the plants are now on the auction block for the highest bidder. So we'll see. IF the interested party gets moving - its possible I can stay there. One good thing, they are looking at office space in Plymouth! Yeah - closer to home and Nate's daycare!!!! Bad thing - 15-20% pay cut fromt he start! Now that will be a huge hit to anyone. But things can change with the wind - so until its done and over I'm there. I don't know if I totally trust some people that say I"m safe till the end of March -

Other than that - I've been enjoying 8 days of vacation - I haven't had a full week since before thanksgiving and won't until next year! I took another 2 days this week and 2 more next! Yeah. Then I"m getting the week between the holidays off as well - can't wait! I'm so spoiled at this point.

Well I should go - the house is a mess and needs some major attention.
Love,
Gail - and family

Eating Cereal

Well Nate had his first taste of spoon fed cereal this evening! He wasn't sure exactly what to think at first, but then started to really like it. He was opening his mouth for the spoon and all! It was fun to take picutres of having all the cereal - ALL over his face and bib - images of orange, green and other colors come to mind. Baby food colors will be tested in a few months! We took video so Nate's grandparents can enjoy it all.

He also had his first bath in the bath tub today! Usually we sit his tub on the kitchen counter - but he's been outgrowing that. So today we put it in the tub - he liked having the water to kick around. It was enjoyable.

Nate also enjoyed his first thankgiving this year at Aunt Doris and Uncle Jonnies! He had a lot of fun with the family. He did give them a first at his crying - he was really tired. Yes - he is a really baby and cries sometimes.

Enjoy the weekend - its almost over. I had a long 5 day weekend and will have the same next weekend! TAking all my vacation (which I didn't realize I had) before I lose it.
Love,
Gail

Short Hello

Just a little HELLO to you all out there.
WE are doing well around here. Thanksgiving is coming - so we are all excited! Nate likes to visit his aunts and uncles! So that will be fun this year.

I found out late last week - I have 8 days of vacation left! They messed up and didn't give them to me or pay me for them for maternity leave. So - I'm going to take as much as I can - before I loose them. So I am taking Wednesday off and we are going to go visit Kathy and see the "grandma room" or "Loretta Room"! Can't wait. We gave her the painting of my mom - so that will be nice.

Then I am taking another 3 days off the week after! Talk about nice long weekends!

Better run - talk to you all later.

Nate's 4 month check up

Well today was his 4 month check up with shots too! Lucky little guy - NOT. He was such a good boy in the waiting area, laughing and smiling and just talking up a storm. Then he got tired with the wait. So he was just fussy for the long visit - they were very behind today. But he survived and is now home and trying to fight taking a nap. He's so tired.

As of today - he weights 17 pounds 14 ounces, 24 3/4 inches long! Not bad! The doctor thinks this long cold is actually allergies to something. We are going to try switching formulas AGAIN. He recommended a soy formula - before that has problems, but we'll try it. WE are just hoping its not allergies to our cat Fudd. We're praying its something else and will just elimiate it out of Nate's little life.

We'll keep you all posted.
Love,
Gail

Santa

Nate met Santa today! We met my friend Sarah and her little boy Tommy at the mall - and Santa just happened to be there - this early! So we took picture of the boys each with Santa and then together. I'll have to try and post them in the next week or so. Nate didn't know what to think of that guy in red with the white hair. It was cute.

Work - well its still there - but not for much longer. I'm irked at a recruiter - early in the week he told me I had "the job" and clearly I didn't get it. So I'm not too happy. But that's ok. Its possible now the one company may keep me - not sure if I want it or not. And my old company said I can come back - they have work I can do now - so who knows. Nothing sounds great. I have another interview later in the week - wish me well.

Lots of love to all
Gail (Craig, Nate andFudd)

Sleeping Good

Well some happy news from me! the last two nights - Nate has "slept' through the night! He woke up briefly a few times, but a pacifier and some music put him right back to sleep! the first night - I had actually went to make a bottle a few times and came back to feed him and he was back to a sound sleep! So that is good! I'm excited. Now we just need to get it so he's not waking up at all! But I'll take what we can get.

He's been very fun lately -he loves sitting up and loves the walker or exersize activity centeres. his Great grandma noted she'd get that for him as a christmas gift. he loves the ones at daycare. He can spin himself all around and loves it so much! He's a cute.

He's starting to flirt and play shy with people when smiling at them. Its adorable. This has been a long week - I was gone a few nights and then came home and Craig was gone - he just landed and is home again!

work - still unknown. they finally announces one plant is selling and another is closing. they still don't have a done deal on things that may allow me to stay on board with a new company! But they are hinting at lay offs in the coming weeks! yeha - I already know I'm on that short list. But I've had some calls the last few days for my resume - so hopefully something will pan out soon.

Checking in

I think we are all feeling much better now. Nate is still fighting his cold, but seems to be doing better. Now dad has the flu - poor guy. AT least it hit after the trip to Texas he took with Marcus last weekend. We have pictures of Nate available at Smiles by Wire through JC Penny - you can take a look at them by going to the following link.

www.smilesbywire.com and entering in the following as needed.

Customer Name: Gail Backus
Access Code: LTP40102036048JCP
They are only available for another month or so - but they are really cute!

Tomorrow is Halloween - I'll unfortunately be traveling, but figured we weren't planning on taking him out anyhow - maybe to just one neighbors house. But he does have his "Baby's First Halloween" outfit - its just an orange shirt with some stuff on it. But cute. Yes - I'm traveling again next week - hopefully it will be a much better trip than this past week - it was horrible. I have audits at my Indiana plants - not fun. They almost failed last week. HOpefully this next trip will be easier. I'm still looking for a job - but still have this one too - so that is good. Just not much out there at this time - everything is either entry level or way too far away. So we'll see. A few poeple have my resume right now - I just hope to get the interviews. Andwho knows - maybe one of the people buying my company will hire me - so far they haven't aske to interview me oh well.

Better go - today is Craig and my 5th wedding anniversary - its beautiful out - just windy. Dad is coming to babysit while we go to a movie and nice dinner tonight. WE talked him into spending the night so he doesn't have to drive home. Good thing he's feeling much better.

Love you all -
Gail, Craig, Nate and little Fudd too!

Backus - House 'o' Flu

HI all - yes - we have it the flu bug! Its NOT fun. We have concluded that Nate had it last week and was sick on WEdnesday. Then Craig had the bug on Friday - we thought it was food poisoning. But when I became sick early Sunday morning - we quickly decided we were wrong. It is definately not a fun thing, I think its hit me the hardest. The boys kicked it in uner 24 hours pretty much. I'm home again today - feeling tons better than yesterday -but still not great. So I figured -take a sick day! Fun -

Other than that - we are doing well. Craig and Nate went to dad's house yesterday to see the family. Aunt Doris, Uncle JOnny, Aunt Chris and cousin Paula were all out to HOwell. I feel bad I couldn't visit with them -but knew I didn't want anyone else to get the flu bug. Craig said they had a good time. Nate was a good boy - and was talking up a storm to everyone. He's been talking all weekend! Just a little chatter box - its quite cute.

Well I'm going to venture to eat something for breakfast - wish me well!

Exciting (sick) week

Well its been exciting. We had our first ER visit on Sunday - all is well. Nate's finger was cut a little while cutting his long finger nails. It wouldn't stop bleeding and his doctor told us to take him in. WEll the hospital probably laughed at us. But he's fine - he was a jolly little baby in the little room. And the bleeding stopped. WE decided he didn't need a stitch either.

Today I had to stay home and take him to the doctors. He was acting like he was getting the flu the last few days. But of course as soon as we get to the doctors today - he's acting like the healthy, happy little boy! Basically - now he has an upper respiratory infection - but not bad. WE are still treating it with over the counter drugs. They said his lungs and heart sounded good. He'll go back in NOvember for a his 4 month check up and get more shots. I've made the appoitnment so Craig can go with me - ha - wait till he sees what they do.

All is well - Nate's been happy, smiling, kicking and laughing all day! He finally ate again (he wasn't eating much the last 24 hours either) and now finally taking a nap.

I'm off to Howell with him later to meet dad - we are going to the grief group together tonight. And tomorrow back to the office to hear more rumors. I've already gotten some phone calls at home today to hear what is "happening". So we'll see. The best is to hope one of these companies needs a corporate environmental person to keep things in line - so we'll see. Maybe they'll let me work from home. But if rumors are correct - there will be significant pay cuts unforutnately - at least the unions were given that speech last night.

Better go - need to get the diaper bag ready for tonight.

First night away

WEll I survived my first night away from Nate this week - so that was good. The next month I'll have a few more over night trips unfortunately. My boss is being cool and trying to limit it as much as possible. So that is good. And yes - still working. We'll see how long it lasts - it changes every day with the rumors.

We all have ANOTHER cold again. Craig and Nate should be at the tail end of thiers - and I'm just beginning. Lucky me. Today we are going to get Nate's 3 month pictures taken. I'm planning on having him wear this adorable sweater my cousin Kim made for him and maybe the hat too! If I can get it on and he'll keep it on. I love hats on him and he hates things on his head -s o we'll see who wins that fight. Craig's going too - so I hope to get one of the two of them together. DAd and my grandma will also be there - we just happened to plan to mee them at the mall today. And then going back to HOwell for a little cook out.

I better get going - still need to give Nate a bath today and get all of us going.
Love,
Gail marie

Pictures are Updated!

You can find two more files of Nate pictures over to
the left! Yeah!

You can see Nate with his grandma Liz and grandpa
Doug! Even Uncle Marcus finally had some free time to
pose with Nate! you can also see Natalie in there
too!

Yesterday we had a lot of fun with dad taking Nate to
the pumpkin patch and apple orchard! It was a lot of
fun - we have a lot of cute pictures there. I'm going
to submit some for a picture contest from the apple
orchard.

Other than that - I still have a job! Not sure for
how long - but at least the pay check went through
last week too! So that was good news. Off to bed -
all 3 of us are fighting colds again.

Survived 1st week back

Hi All - yup - its Saturday morning! Nate and I survived our first week into the groove! He caught a nice cold at daycare too! But seems to be doing well - just a cough and stuffy/runny nose. And the thrush may finally be going away! Yeah!!

I did survive the week - it was sure a long one with all the rumors abound at the office. One minute we will not be there in a few weeks, the next we're there till June. So who knows - someone but they sure aren't telling us much at all. I guess its a waiting game. I can handle that for now - its a pay check. And it seems no one did anything really while I was gone - lucky me - at least life is busy at the office while way too quiet (so many people are just gone).

Today - we are all going out to Howell. Nate and I will hang out with Grandpa Doug while daddy takes Grandpa Ron to a rock show. We thought we'd have more fun at the house with Billy Jean and maybe get a glimpse of Uncle Marcus for a few minutes. And yes - we finally have a picture with Uncle Marcus actually HOLDING Nate - one of these days we'll have Craig post everything to the site link.

Nate's getting really big - almost 3 months old! YIkes! And a little chunk - but a cute one. And all the blonde hair is coming in - its still very light - so you can't see it too well in the pictures - but it is there.

Talk to you all later!

1st Day

Well Nate and I both survived the 1st day yesterday. he seemed to do really well at day care. i called and they told me he was doing great and wished all new kids adjusted as well. We knew he'd be a trooper. I made it through too - couldn't wait to leave early to go get my hands on the little guy. It took me over an hour to get there from my office. not a fun drive. But loved seeing him when I got my hands on him. He was definately a happy little guy.

work is just work - nothing has changed unfortunately. So we'll see how long I have a job here - keep your fingers crossed.

Back to work

Well I'm back to work in the morning and Nate's off to day care. It will be interesting to see how Craig and I do tomorrow. HOpefully we can keep Nate up late tonight and he'll sleep till 5 am again! He's been doing good the last week or so - sleeping 6-7 hours at night! We like that. Unfortunately its still getting up at 3 or 4 am! Oh well - we are just happy for a solid block of hours like that - doesn't sound like many people get that.

My company sounds like they MAY (yes a big maybe) have an investor - so that will be good. I may get to avoid the unemployment line for now! Yeah - after a month with no pay check that will be good.

Nate was at his Day care - Childtime - last Friday and seemed very happy. We hung out for a few minutes with the care takers and other kids. He was smiling and just had fun looking at all the stuff. So that is exciting.

HOpe you all check out the pictures on the family photos on this site. We are trying to keep it updated. We'll let you know how this week goes.

Nate's Doctor's Appointment

Nate survived his two-month check-up!

He's 13 pounds 9 ounces and 23 1/2" long. He can now officially be referred to as "Hoss." He had three shots today which included 5 vaccines, and I've been informed that I get to go to the 4 month checkup to help "hold him down." :-(

Overall, the doctor was pleased with his progress. (Which also means we've passed the two-month parenting test, and he won't be calling social services on us!)

I posted many new pictures to the website, so feel free to check them out. There's a Nate folder, and Nate 200408 folder, and I'll keep making news ones for each month.

Take care,

Craig

Good Nights sleep!

Wow - we had a great night last night. Actually a lot the last week or so. Last night Nate slept for 7 hours! That is the record. WE've had a few 6 hour nights in the last week and were happy with those. Now we just have to get those hours a little later - typically its 3 or 4 am when those 6-7 hours end. But we are still happy with all of those.

He's now trying to get his lunch and sleep for the afternoon. He hasn't had much of a nap this morning, so he's due for a good nap this afternoon. Getting into a little pattern, so we'll take it. We are confident we'll get more or a routine once we start day care in a week. Looking forward to that as well.

2 Months Old today

HI everyone - thought its been a while I better put out a little update. Its been a busy few weeks with visitors. Over labor day weekend, Nate was able to meet his Grandma Liz! We all had a great time - went to Bronner's in Frankenmuth, visited the day care to get things set up and even had a BBQ with some family and friends! Nate had a grand old time - he really enjoyed meeting and getting to know grandma Liz. Lots of pictures were taken, so when we get some time, we'll get them all posted to the site for all to see.

This week Craig has off for vacation so we are hanging out as a family - its a lot of fun too! Today we are meeting some people for lunch and tomorrow Nate and I go visit SArah and Tommy. I worked with Sarah and Tommy is her little boy - he's a month older than Nate. We figure they can be close buddies as they grow old.

Next week Nate has his 2 month check up and gets some shots. That should be interesting - grandpa Doug is going to go with us to that. Giving me the moral support mostly! I'm sure they'll tell us he's growing fine and the thrush is going away too!

I go back to work on the 20th - so wish me luck! I'll be back at Oxford and probably need to travel a lot in October.

Just an update

Hi all - just an update for everyone out there. Last week I had my doctors appointment and I'm good to go! This coming Friday will be 8 weeks! Can you believe our little man has been around for 2 months almost! But I"m planning on going back to work on the 20th. We'll see how that goes (rumor is that the company will file Chapter 7 and close the doors on October 2nd) - so who knows.

The whole house had a cold last week, so dealing with a baby that has no idea what's wrong was tough. He didn't let us sleep too much at the end of last week. But the saline drops and the bulb thing help to clear out his nose. We ended up at the doctor with Nate yesterday for thrush in his mouth - so now we have medicine for that. Poor little thing. But he seems to be doing really well - no fever (or very little the doctor was not too concerned) and his chest and lungs sounded good! He's a little chunck now - weighing in at 12 pounds 6.5 ounces! We go back in 2 weeks for his 2 month check up and start all the immunization shots then as well. So that will be fun- planning it so either dad or Craig can go with me. Not sure how well I'll hold up with all the shots! But Nate is having a good old time- he's so much more attentative and trying to be active. He loves to play on the floor mats and kick his legs. Especially during changing time! Its his new little game - even did the "ride the bike" dance for the doctor yesterday. He's starting to smile too! Its the cutest thing I've seen, but of course, I'm prejudice! He was adorable yesterday morning when Craig went to say good bye for the day, he just smiled up at his daddy! He just loves his daddy and looks like him too.

WE had our first over night guests this weekend too - Rob, Janet and the kids were here - so that was fun. Rob and Janet are Craig's friends from Rochester, NY - we had a lot of fun. This weekend grandma Liz is coming for a visit. We aer all excited and desparately trying to clean house (its getting there). Nate can't wait to meet his grandma - that will be fun. WE have some plans to take her to Frankenmuth and then have a little BBQ over at our house on Monday! And what ever she would like to see - we're up for it.

Better run - talk to you all later.

Nate's Hearing test

Nate was a little trooper yesterday and survived the hearing test. He was a great little guy and slept through it all. The technician didn't really care for his noises (he's a noisey sleeper just like his daddy). But she told me he passed and his hearing was ok. I'm not 100% confident that she knew what I asked and what she was saying - there was a slight language barrier - but I decided to take the positive road. Grandpa Doug was also great to help us out yesterday getting us to the doctors office and back! He even stayed and we all met for dinner (Marcus, Craig and us)

Today - Nate had another adventure, He went to see where daddy works and to meet his co-workers! Everyone thought he was adorable and so calm. Guess we need to takea video of Nate at 3 am fussing. I've been up since about 3 am with only a few hours of shut eye since then. I'm exhausted (and fighting a cold). Tomorrow Nate has his first baby-sitters officialy. Both grandpa's are coming to watch him while Criag and I go to a wedding! So that will be fun - fun for us to get out.

Now next week we need to plan a trip to my office for Nate to meet some of my friends.

Quick note

Well we are having a much better last few days. The weekend was really rough with the new formula - thought it was working on Saturday because Nate slept great - but realized it was just having him out side all day at the two birthday parties. Nate got to meet the Wilcox clan so taht was fun, he napped for most of it. And then he met Craig's co-workers at another birthday party.

Anyhow - very early Monday morning when I was up around 3 am and didn't get back to sleep at all - I realized the gas issue was still bad. The poor little guy seemed to be in so much pain - it just wasn't fair. I had been told by many people that Nestle's Good STart worked well for your kids and I also talked to the nurse at the doctors office. She recommended something called Nurtamigen (which is more expensive). I looked at the prices at the store - the Nurtamigen brands were pretty much double in price of anything else we have used. Therefore - I decided to take advice from all of you and try the Good Start first. And heck - good advice so far. The last 48 hours he's been on it and still trying to get the other out of his system. But the gas pains seem less severe and less frequent. He'll always have gas - we all do - so I figured as long as its not too painful - we'll keep trying the Good Start! Yeah! Now I want all of you to keep your fingers crossed that it will work.

Yesterday we had another big outting - my friend Kris and her family came up from Indiana and hung out with us all day. so that was nice. Tomorrow dad comes to help me take Nate to the hearing test -again cross your fingers that he sleeps through it so we can get it completed and pass! If not - we'll deal with what we need, it can't be that bad.

I'll try and update the site later this week once we know more on his hearing.

Nate's ENT appointment

Well as expected, not much happened at the specialist today. He said its very early to really determine any hearing loss. HOwever, he understood all the nurses and Nate's doctor want to have him retested. So basically, we will go to another office next Thursday for them to do another hearing test. Please pray he'll be asleep for the test so that it can be completed. That was the problem at the hospital.

Other than that - all is well. He's sleeping now and trying to get used to this new formula - we'll see how this one works or go back to the other.

Nate's 1 month checkup

Hi everyone,
Nate was 1 month old yesterday and had his 1 month check up today with the doctor. He's doing really well - gained weight and length. He's now 9 pounds 9 ounces and 20.5 inches long! The doctor is very happy with both.

He did recommend trying a lactose free formula to see if that will help with his constipation and gas issues. I hope so - poor little guy - and from what I have read if he is lactose intolerant now - its probably something with his hormones and he'll out grow it.

we have the appointment for his hearing tomorrow - wish us luck! (even though the probably won't know anything without testing).

August 9th

Well its been a while since I posted last. We are all doing well - Nate has had a lot of good and a few bad days. Last week he slept really well for us at night - the last few nights, he would sleep all day and then be up all night. Just being fussy. He's been awake a lot today - so we'll see how he does tonight.

He even survived his first big garage sale last week. He and I helped dad out at the 3 day event. Didn't do as good as we would have hoped - but better than nothing I suppose. Nate was able to meet a lot of people those few days - many people came out just to meet the little guy. He did very good till Mr. Lutz held him and Nate's little diaper just couldn't hold out any longer. Oops.

Right now he's sleeping and we are about to go do laundry. Kyle is over painting in his room again - Nate already loves the work - he sits and stares at the waves she has painted.

WE have his one month check up tomorrow morning and then an appointment with the hearing doctor on Wednesday. Not sure if they will even do a test on WEdnesday or just chekc him out and send us downtown. WE shall see.

Big weekend

Well Nate had a big weekend - Friday we spent the day out at dad's house trying to get ready for the big estate/garage sale this week (Thursday - Saturday if anyone wants to come by and say HI - we will probably be there in the afternoons).

Yesterday we went to his first birthday party for our friend Jimmy who turned 4 and then today back out to Howell to help dad with a few more things. Good thing Marcus is out in Howell now - he helped dad a TON yesterday going through things - now lets hope he can help dad lug all the stuff up into the garage for us! Now that would be good. We have so much stuff - lots of antiques - so come and shop! It was actually better than I thought it would be finding a lot of things mom had saved or bought for us - stuff like that. But today I found some additional love letters between mom and dad and pictures she saved from her senior class trip! And a bunch of photo albums - the first one I found - pictures from when I was born - actually the baby shower family gave mom when she was having me! So that was pretty cool to look at. Still a lot to go throug, but I think we all agree the stuff in the basement isn't as important as the stuff upstairs. We can go through that stuff - someday! When we are ready.

We are all tired tonight -well Nate's been sleeping most of the evening - so lets hope he still sleeps good tonight. He's been doing better the last few nights for us - so taht is good. He's also been able to meet a lot of friends today! Elizabeth Snider (Reed), John Reed, Mrs. Grill, Mr. Wilson and then the Shadekers (hope I spelt that some what close). So it was fun -

Better go - need to get some rest before my mornign wake up calls - we have a great system going - Craig gets the late night feeding and I get the early morning ones.

Pictures online

Ok - here you all go - click on the Family PHoto's Link over to the left and you can access a ton of our pictures - even Nate photo's.

Have fun - wish us luck tonight - Nate's been fussy the last few nights.  But we have now ventured into pacifier land!  It seems to work wonders - if he won't breastfeed - guess why not!

July 28th

Nate, daddy and I are doing well.  Nate and I had our first big adventure yesterday.  We traveled to Okemos to meet my friend Sarah and her new baby Tommy (6 weeks old).  It was fun - we hung out for a few hours and just had fun.  Then we went to grandpa's house and out to dinner in Howell!  Nate even met Billie - Uncle Marcus' big dog!  Billie did pretty well - more curious as to what this new little "thing" was.  Sniffing and licking Nate's little feet!

MOnday Nate also had a big day with Grandpa - he was able to babysit for a few hours while I got out of the house to run a few erands.  Which was really nice!  Thanks dad!

Today - we are just chilling out - we had to switch his formula last night - so he's adjusting to that today.  I think he's down for a little nap right now.  He had me up this morning before 5 am!  So I'm a little tired.

two weeks old

Well Nate's now two weeks old and doing good.  Getting a little more fussy and wanting to eat a LOT more.  We were able to see a lactation specialist this week and it may not be easy for us to breastfeed.  Even though he's done it twice now - its not enough.  One - he's not a good "sucker" and I'm not getting enough milk for him. There are a few things we are going to talk to my doctor about so we'll see.  Wish us luck!  Still pumping to get what he can - but its not enough.

Nate's starting to stay awake a little more too.  Which is fun - and his eyes are starting to change color too. Still blue just not as dark - they were almost navy blue before!  Very pretty - but they are getting a little ligher.  Can't wait to see what color they end up - probably a blue or green with the colors in the family.

We also had our first restaurant dinner last night and our first dinner at friends is tonight!  Lets hope he's a good boy for us!

Better run - trying to get a few things done before we leave tonight.  Sorry we are so busy have a hard time updating every day.  Emailed out some pictures Kathy took last week - very cute.  Craig says it is very difficult to post to this page - but one of these days we'll probably get more posted to the www.craigbackus.com website.

Toxemia update

Good afternoon all - I'm taking a few minutes while Nate is still sleeping.  He had a difficult time last night and just wanted to be held to sleep again.  Hopefully tonight will be different.

Anyhow - I had my doctor visit today and found out I have lost 21 pounds since last Monday!  Yeah!  So I'm definately down below prepregnancy weight!  So I'm excited.  I still have "a good amount" of swelling in my legs according to the doctor, but he's happy to see I'm still loosing all the water.  My blood pressuer today he said was OK - even though it was about the same as it was when they sent me in to have Nate.  Guess not being pregnant, they don't consider it high now.  So that was good.  He's just checking the one liver enzyme today and we should have the results tomorrow.  He said last week it was very slightly elevated and nothing to be worreid about.  High is 34 and mine was like 58 - he would be concerned if it were 600 or 2000.  However, he still needs to monitor this level to ensure that it is going down below the 34.  So just like Nate's jaundice, just keeping an eye on things.  Can't complain about that.

Today is Nate and my first day alone - so far so good.  He's been sleeping and even ventured to Meijer with me to pick up a few things.  Tomorrow is his next doctor appointment, mostly to check his weight and be referred to an audiologist for his hearing.  Doctor didn't seem to worried about it last week - so that was good too.
Enjoy the day!

Nate News (good too)

Well Nate had a big day today!  He was in his first "traffic incident" at the medical office parking lot (he slept through it all - thank goodness).  As dad and I were driving out some woman just backed out and hit us!  No big damage to the van, just cracked the plastic around the front blinker (luckily)!

Next he went to the grocery store!  Whoo hoo!

He had only one visitor (grandpa doesn't count as a visitor) today and a lot from the family yesterday - so that was fun.

The doctor called and told us the jaundice is going away!  Yeah!  So he's doing good on that front.  And my excitement is he finally got the hang of the breastfeeding today!  He got something - so that is better than the last week of trying.  I owe it to my friend Sarah who just had her little Tommy in June - to just keep trying!  It takes a week or two!  So hopefully things will slowly progress towards that better end of things!  Yeah!

Well I think daddy is putting him down for the evening (before the next feeding).  I think we will go relax and watch last weeks episode of Monk!
Have a good weekend everyone.

First afternoon alone

WEll today is our first afternoon alone - going well so far. Craig had to go back to work today - missing his Nate time I'm sure! But we are all doing well. Dad was here this morning to help out which was nice. Just to give me time to get a shower was great! He'll be back though tonight and tomorrow. I've got plans to have him go shopping with Nate and I and to get Nate's blood tested again.

The doctor did call back last night and his bilirubin level did go up slightly, but not that much. The doctor thinks yesterday was the "peak" day and wants to test tomorrow to ensure it is going down. He doesn't seem too concerned, so that is good.

Me - I'm excited, feeling a ton better today and not really sure what was up yesterday. And realized I finally lost all the weight in the last 2-3 days! I am now down to what I was or less then I was before I was pregnant! So that is good news to me. I'm excited.

WEll I'm going to take a nap while the little guy sleeps this afternoon.

Settling In

So far, so good......

Nate had his first doctor's appointment yesterday. The doctor's hopeful that we can run the hearing test again and it will turn out to be nothing. We'll be making arrangements to do that soon.

The doctor wanted to have his billiruben level checked, and we to the lab yesterday to have blood drawn. We were a little concerned about the pediatrician we chose, but we got a call with the results last night at 7:30 from the doctor himself! This earned big points in the "Backus book of Points" so we'll be staying with them for the foreseeable future.

He said he would have been concerned if this number was over 25, and the number was 15.5. He wanted to do it again today to make sure it was going down, so I took Nate this afternoon ALL BY MYSELF! How do you like that? We haven't heard about those results, but I guess I might hear something later tonight.

Gail hasn't been feeling 100%, but we're hoping it will pass in the next few days. She saw her doctor on Monday about the fluid issue, and he said that it's an after effect of the toxemia. He said that it should pass in a week or so. Gail was dealing with a headache today and is hoping that with some rest she'll feel better. I'm headed back to work tomorrow, and Doug will be coming to help out, so hopefully that will help get us through to Gail being back on her feet.

I'm trying to get a picture of Nate awake for everyone, but he's not awake too much just yet, and when he is he's eating or crying! Maybe later today we'll have a Kodak moment!

Nate's Home!

We survived our first night at home.

He's still getting used to sleeping by himself, so sometimes we have to take turns holding him to get him to sleep. At least now we're in a bigger space and can take turns so we get some sleep.

Nate seems to be doing pretty well. He has his first doctor's appointment tomorrow. We're still trying to figure out how to get the breastfeeding going, but in the meantime, he's getting some formula so that he doesn't get sick. We're a little worried about one of his hearing tests because one ear didn't pass in the hospital. It could just be he was fussy, and now he's getting more used to life outside the womb, so hopefully that won't be a problem.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers that came our way. It certainly is a miracle, and now the fun begins!

NO Baby yet

Just to let people know - the baby is still cookin! Craig didn't get his 4th of July baby - Marcus' friend Sal did though!!! Baby Sal was born that evening!

Doing good - we all survived the first "official" holiday without mom - it sucked as expected! But we got through it. Poor dad was recruited by both his kids this weekend to help out - I think we tuckered him out but good! but we both got a lot done. Marcus's house was totally ready to be sold and between dad and Craig - we have things moving forward for baby B to arrive. Oh - we still hvae a lot to do and organization to complete - but we are better than we were the other day. Tonights task - packing the bag for the hospital. I now have the baby's clothes and blankets washed - so taht will help. Even have a few coming home outfits to wear - I bought one girl and one boy outfit a few months back.

Next Dr. appointment is on Thurday - will keep everyone posted. If my feet continue the path they did this weekend - not sure what they will do - I can barely get my shoes or even socks on at this point- they are just that swollen. Even turned a little purple the other day - not fun. Overall - achy! this weekend was the first - difficult sleeping period - maybe because of the heat and just a lot of little practice contractions as I call them. Body is preparing for the big day! But heck - in the whole picture - I still am pretty lucky with so little problems or anything with this pregnancy - had all of them before hand trying to get this miracle child! Now lets hope this kid will be just as good in real life. Heck - As Craig and I like to say - the older child is usually the better one! Ha - I know Marcus doesn't read this - so I can joke about that - but incase - marcus and Jennifer - we love you both!

Another Baby update

Just to let everyone know - the blood tests yesterday came back just fine! So that means I'm fine - so I know that will make some very happy! Me especially - they will just continue to monitor my blood pressuer closely!

Weekly Baby update

Well I'm not sure if people are still tuning into this website or not - but just incase we said we'd keep it going. Craig and I had our appointment this morning and it looks like Baby B is still going strong. The doctor still thinks its bigger than the ultrasound calculated (yes - nothing is very accurate until the little one is physically put on a scale). Technically it would be about 6.5 pounds this week - he thinks its a lot bigger. The doctor hasn't said anything about inducing at this time - but Craig and I just don't think its good right now. Know a few people that induced only because they thought the baby was big - and it wasn't. We'd rather it have more developement time anad us more time to get ready! We stil have LOTS to get done at the house - good thing for the holiday weekend.

The heart beat was also very strong. And I'm still only dilated to 1 cm! So yes - anyone placing bets last week - we did not have the baby yet! I think the doctor was surprised as well today. He didn't say how far effaced yet - but he could feel the head. He told us the baby is in the right position and low - sitting on my bladder. In the last day or two its been difficult to walk - making me belive the baby did drop down - even though you can't tell by the belly! The doctor agreed.

His only concern today was me - my blood pressuer was up compared to where it has been for many weeks. Its not drastically high - just higher than normal. so he had me give them some blood to test for Toxemia - I should have some results back by the end of today. he said its nothing to worry about - because right now I've been good up to this point. My guess is I'd be put on some medicine and maybe rest for a few weeks. Which would be alright - boring and alone with my own thoughts - so that may not be too good. Lucky I'll just have to ask my friends to come keep me company if that is the case. But honestly - seeing how things have turned out so good with this pregnancy - I really think I'm fine.

so keep your fingers crossed we have a few more weeks - I did make it to my 1 year anniversary here at work - oficially its today! So now that means I am 100% available for the FMLA laws (pending work being shut down) and can get the full package when the doors do shut in the future here! Its not much - but its double what I would have gotten if they decided to lay me off yesterday!

Next appointment is thursday July 8th! Will keep you updated then - unless something else happens in the mean time.

A new week

Well its been a very long week as you can tell by all the posts. We made it through everything last week and without the baby coming early! Which was good. I have to say it had to be the most difficult week of my life - but I wanted to thank (and I know this comes from the all 4 of us) all the family and friends for EVERYTHING that you did! IT means so much to us all. Especially the family and even friends that drove from all over to be there with us in our time of grief. It is just amazing to know how great our everyone is. And I'm glad everyone is also making it home safely as well!

I know dad and I were talking today - and we felt bad we may not have talked to everyone that came to the visitations and funeral - please accept our apologizes. We were busy trying to talk to everyone and with me- I had everyone trying to keep me seated. Which it did help! Probably one reason the baby still isn't here yet (yes - that is good).

The funeral and everything were beautiful - Craig, Marcus and Kathy's speaches were so amazing they captured mom perfectly. I know we can all add stories and comments on the wonderful person she was - it reminds me I want to be more like her every day. And I am so thankful she was my mom and I have her as my example to raise my child in this world! She was amazing and always will be - we need to remember she's still with us and will be living through this baby in the near future again.

Thank you all for everything- the love and kindness were amazing by just everyone around. I know dad is still surprised by everything people have and are still doing. And if you want to help - just keep an eye on him for me! (yes dad - I know you will read this too - I'll have my spys out in Howell watching out for you - just because I love you so much! I'm not planning on doing this again for a minimum of 20 years).

For many people - Craig and I will keep this website updated for a while longer on baby updates. I know his earlier post noted the next appointment is this Wednesday morning - we'll go from there on the progress of baby B. I know I've been having more practice contractions over the last few days- but know its not the "real" thing just yet.
Thanks again for everyone - we'll never be able to put into words what it means to the family.

Then Came Sunday

We've gotten word that many people have made it home safe and sound after making the trip up to Michigan. I'm so glad that everyone was able to come and be with the family in this time. We've all lost someone near and dear to us, and it's going to take time to heal.

At Helen's request, I've set up a blogsite for the Britt family at:

http://britt_family.blogspot.com/

I sent out invitations to a number of people to participate, so if you didn't get one, it just means that I didn't have an e-mail address handy, so let me know and I can send you an invite as well. If you set up a basic profile in blogger then you can publish a post just as Gail and I have rather than just adding comments to other posts.

There's no additional news on the baby today. The baby is moving, and our next appointment is early Wednesday morning.

Baby Update

Well we have some good news this week- baby news. The baby is definatley on its way - it could be here anytime basically - and the doctor did say it is possible to go full term (another 4 weeks). So that is good - but a big possibilty the baby still can come early.

I have started to dilate already - 1 cm - 10 cm is needed. So cRaig and I have the lecture on what to look for and not to stray too far from home basically - just stay in the metro area.

We also had an ultrasound which dad was able to be at with us - due to everything this week, they could squeeze us in this afternoon. So that was so nice for me to have dad there with me! I am still hoping he'll be with Craig and I when the baby is born- still need my "birth partners"! I think we can con him into that as well.

Baby looks healthy - big - about 6 pounds so far (just a guess). But I'm sure its a good guess.

Craig and I will probably keep this website going to now share the happy news for the next month or so. Please feel free to check in - mom was so excited for this baby and we KNOW that the baby and her family were always topic #1 over the last few weeks. She'd want everyone to be happy for this occasion and remember all the good times- her family and friends were the most important thing in her life - everyone came first in her book.

Miracle Needed

Ok - mom's doing pretty darn bad - I probably won't post much this week.

She's in ICU, in a coma, the THINK she has perminant brain damage from a possible blood clot OR that the leukemai has spread to her brain and spinal fluid. She's too week and her blood counts are too low to do the tests. Oh - but ironically- her white blood cells are way up and over the level to come home - nice huh?

Anyhow - the siblings are all on their way up and some will be in tonight and staying at the hospital with dad and Marcus. I needed to rest - I'm exhausted - tried to sleep at the hotel at the hospital this afternoon - and just couldn't. Not like I"ll get much sleep tonight - but in my own bed.

Please pray for some miracle that we will all get through - it does not look good at all. Please know we will inform people of everything later this week. Right now - pray for Dad, Marcus, Craig, Baby B and I. We need the strength to get through all of this - especially dad.
Love,
Gail and family

Emergency Prayers needed

Ok - mom had a horrible day yesterday - long story - must tell later.

Anyhow - she fell alseep yesterday afternoon and the doctors can not get her to wake up at this point. Please pray for her to wake up and feel better. Pray for my father, Marcus, Craig and I and all the relatives that we can make it through another day too.

She has been moved from her room and is now in the ICU - we can not accept phone calls today - please understand - mom takes number one priority at this moment!

Mom's Surprise

Marcus, dad, Craig and I all met for lunch today to celebrate Marcus' birthday and father's day. Then we all headed over to visit with mom. She was pretty tired, they were giving her more platelets and blood - so they had her doped up on Tylenol and Benedryl. But she was coming around when we were there. She even was all dressed up and got out of the room. She had told the nurses her family was all coming and they made her get all done up. I guess they decided that her chemo is over and its time to dress in something other than hospital gowns! So that was really nice of them.

It was a nice visit - but mom is still very weak and tired. Her counts did all go up today! Her white counts went up 400 points! So that was good news too. We are just trying to build up the strength and get her butt home.

The nurses there are just great and all know we are expecting a baby/grandbaby soon- plus its a little hard to hide my belly or waddle anymore. I'm ALL out front. So I asked if mom could hear the heart beat with a stethescope. So the nurse went to get it - and instead ran up to the maternity ward and took a some doppler equipment that allows you to hear the heart beat so much easier! After a while we finally found it! It took 3 nurses - and we figured out the baby is facing downward and is sideways today. Hopefully it will turn or else that is grounds for a c-section. Anyhow - we heard the heart beat! It was so exciting to share that with the family. A little embarassing, because some other people walked in and got a nice belly shot with all these nurses around me with some monitor - I was pretty well blocked - but a little odd to see I'm sure. I think some people were also sitting in the room could hear it as well - they all just smiled! It was nice to see a big smile on mom and dad's faces. We aer going to the ultrasound on Wednesday - mostly to see how big this little one is - we are hoping they will not recommend inducing labor early - Craig and I are just not ready! And we feel that if baby and I are fine - we'd rather wait a few more weeks to let the baby develope as much as possible. I'm planning on asking for a good picture just for mom to have! The nurses say that is one of the things keeping her going - the baby and her family!

WE finaly were able to give her all the posts today - you can't imagine how much those mean to her. Also all the gifts people are sending, dropping off and even making! To the Bunko Group - that quilt was beautiful and you had us all in tears with that poem. And Sal and Katie - not sure if Marcus ever shared this website - but she loved the frog too! I know many others have sent gifts, cards, anything - trust me she loves it all and I can't remember them all off the top of my head.

I'm hoping to spend more time with mom tomorrow - I think I was in withdraws not seeing her all week - but my sore throat is totally gone.

Friday afternoon update

HI all - spoke to mom only for a brief time today - she's very tired and needs her rest - doctors orders for the day. rest today and build strength back up tomorrow. She's taking it to the letter!

the blood counts really are not moving much - white cells did go down yesterday (dad told me that last night). Its very frustrating - but we just hope it means the chemo is working and doing its thing.

I haven't been able to confirm all this with dad yet - realized I have made too many calls on my cell phone - so trying to behave till next month and extra minutes kick in. Anyhow - mom said the doctor plans on taking a bone marrow sample next week - even though she's got a lot of sores right now. He said it doesn't matter. We really won't know what's going on and how things have worked until he gets those results back. Not sure how long that will take - I know from before it took about 48 hours to evaluate the bone marrow to finally determine ALL. But it took about a week to get the final results - but they thought it was something else first. So we'll see. Please keep us all in your prayers - especially mom for strength and patiences to get through this trial in her life. We are all staying very positive and need all the positive re-enforcemtns we can get right now. I know I've never been good with surprises and the "not knowing" so this is very hard on me. I know its hard on all of us - we are not ready to give up this fight yet - and gosh darn it - we will do what ever it takes to do this.

If mom needs a bone marrow or stem cell transplant - please think very hard if you would ever consider being a donor. We know there is a good chance that a relative will be a match - but just incase - think about it first. If needed, we'll go out and ask people to get tested - even if you can't help mom - just think you can help someone else. I've been on the databank for a few years now and have never been contacted.

Baby Update

Good news - baby is still BIG! I guess my belly measures pretty big right now - but that is ok. The heart rate and my blood pressure is still good. They now want me to come in once a week for a check up - probably going to see how things are progressing more closely. The good/bad news - the ultrasound is scheduled for next week - June 23rd! That is good news - bad (well not really bad) - not sure if mom will be out to come see the ultrasound. If not - we hope dad can come as well- he needs a little happy boost as well. He just doesnt' want to know the sex - we'll see. Its up to the baby if its ready to let me know.

Getting excited! Time is getting close - only a few more weeks! 5 weeks and counting!

Do we have to bring our own?

MId week!

Well I just got off the phone with mom - she sounds pretty darn good! The bag-o-food seems to be doing the trick to get her some strength back. Her counts have been going up all week as well - not sky rocketing up - but continuing the climb in the right directions! So that is good. she should finish the 12 day chemo this Friday and then I think we wait till her counts go up and she can come home! The plan is (as of early this week) that she'll have a few weeks off to rest and build strength back up before the 5 day treatment - so that will be nice. If we can get her home for a few weeks - she should be able to go see the ultrasound at the end of June! So I'm excited. I still have to get permission from the doctor tomorrow - but I don't see why her and dad can't come in for a little glance at mom's little peanut.

She's loving everyone's phone calls, cards, etc. It means so much to her - she just is so amazed people care so much is all she says. We keep telling her its because of her - she's too loveable and loves everyone else. Some day it may sink in.

Other than that - life is good - baby update will come tomorrow! I can't see mom right now due to a sore throat - but will get it checked out by the doctor tomorrow. HOpefully its just allergies and not a virus I heard was going around.

We also ordered mom's wig this week! will be interested to see how it looks on her - we decided she'll be blonde! She's very positive about the hair - and so glad my aunt Chris was able to give her some hats/turbins. She's been using them a lot.

Will update with baby news tomorrow and any new info on mom. So far this week - its all been pretty normal.

Mom and Nursery update

Ok - mom's doing a lot better - her counts went up a little more today and her strenght is getting better. We know it takes time - but any progress to be seen is good. Her doctors are still happy with her progress.

Marcus went today to start the process to see if he will be a match to donate platelets to mom. If necessary, we may ask the family in MIchigan to do so as well if they are willing. We first will see how Marcus matches and go from there. To do anything - you would need a note or request from mom's doctors - so don't worry about it yet. He's just being very proactive and wanting to know who is a good match for anything needed now rather than wait till its needed in an emergency situation. So that is good. Not sure if he's received or reviewed all the siblings bone marrow results yet - I'll keep on mom and dad to remember to ask. I know I have been tested already too and in the databank - so maybe I'm a match and we can figure it out when needed. I unfortunately can't do anything with blood until after the baby is here (and not sure how long I have to wait). And the baby may be a stem cell donor too! Wouldn't that be cool.

Mom's tired now - but feeling a lot better - knows a lot of the family are coming up this summer and looking forward to visits and picnics with everyone.

Baby news - Craig finisehd all the furniture for the nursery! We now have it all in its spot and the bedding is on the bed. Fudd even tested out the crib and seemed to enjoy it. His new place is the rocking chair and ottoman in the nursery. Just happy he's adjusting to the change and getting used to the room now before the baby arrives. Next, my cousin Kyle is coming to see what she can do to paint a mural on the wall(s) for us later this week. We are very excited - she's very talented too- so it will be very special. We still need to put things away, but waiting to move things for painting &/or border first. So getting excited. Next appointment is Thursday morning - Marcus' birthday!!! He's hitting the big 30! See I can say this because I know he doesn't even know what this website is - he can get mad later :-) (not sure if that smily face will come out)

Weekend UPdate

Ok - I sound like the SNL skit. Anyhow - was able to visit with mom for a little bit today. She's still just exhausted from the treatments on Friday. They did her new daily chemo in the morning and didn't do the big "Friday" treatment till after 5 pm. So the double dose and continued daily treatments have just worn her out! So please know if the phone is busy she probably has it off the hook. IF its busy for more then 30-60 minutes just make that assumption. She needs her sleep right now. And today - they are giving her platelets and all the antibiotics - so she's just going to be resting a lot this afternoon and evening.

Over all - she's doing pretty darn good, the counts did go down a little as expected after Friday's treatment - but not as low as they have in the past. So that is really good. WE know they go down on the weekends and usually rebound by MOnday - so she'll feel better tomorrow.

The doctors finally started her on food through the IV - she just isn't able to eat that much. It sounds silly - but I don't think we can understand until we are in her shoes. Some of the biggest side effects of chemo is sores in the mouth, lack of appetite and nothing tasting good. She's got them all right now. And the medicine for her mouth makes it worse. She is trying very hard to eat as much as she can. And that will help - they think the medicine for her mouth has coated her stomach and real food will be able to help wash that out of there and help her feel better. Even if she can't -the nutrition in the IV will just give her some of her strenght back. WE are all hopeful that once the 12 day treatments are done (should be this next weekend) her counts will have built up high enough to come home. Its a little scarey -but we know that the doctors won't let her come home until she's able. And like I've said before- we will continue with family only visits for a while until mom is ready. Getting an infection now will just push the last 5-6 weeks of treatments down the tube! I know no one wants to see that happen. And I need her healthy to see the baby's ultrasound in a few weeks and to be there at the hospital when the baby is born (my doctors are fine with it - but she will need her doctors permission - she won't hurt the baby or I - but we need clearance that her counts are ok to be at my hospital).

So over all - good weekend lots of positive news! Very thankful - just seeing her weak is very difficult - mom's never really been too sick. So for all of us - its hard to watch and see her like this. FAith in God will get us through and it seems to be working.

Continue with the phone calls - it does mean a lot to her talking to family especially! She loves you all so much and she loves the posts that Craig prints off of this website for her too!
Love Gail and gang

FYI - Posts

Just to let someone know - I deleted the one post from yesterday ONLY because it was accidentally a duplicate and I figured out how to do it. I unfortunately did not realize it left a note that I deleted it. Sorry -

Also - I've had a few people email me asking who's been posting the nice poems and writings the last few days. People seem to really find inspiration in them and would were wondering if you could include your name (that is of course up to you). People say thank you!

Have a good day.
GAil

A new Start?

Well its Saturday morning - won't be talking to mom till later this afternoon in hopes she is getting the needed rest she needs this morning. Yesterday was a little different than the last few Fridays. DAd was able to get to the hospital in time to see the doctor again (Yeah!) - but man its very early before 7 am. The doctor said he didn't think they would do the 12 day chemo yesterday but do the normal Friday chemo. Anyhow - that changed - they ended up deciding to do both. Which is fine -it just postponed the big Chemo treatment back to late afternoon/early evening. At 3:30 yesterday, mom still hadn't had the "Friday chemo". But maybe being so late - she would be tired and sleep some last night.

The doctor was very pleased by mom's progress this past week all her blood counts kept rising! It sounds like yesterday may be the last Friday treatment for this "round"! She'll continue the 12 day treatment for the remainder of time (so that should end next weekend). The one down side is mom isn't eating much. Mostly because of the stomach virus she had over the last few days - so they said they may give her some food/nutrients in the IV. Not sure how she feels about it - but dad and I were talking yesterday and thought it may be a good idea. This way she won't feel bad if she can't eat anything, but can still try. And she'll automatically be getting some nutrition to help build up her strength. She already has the IV ports - may as well just hang another bag up there. Getting her strength back now is very important.

The doctor also told dad as of yesterday (things may change - but that is ok) that he felt she needed some time off before the 5 day intensive treatment. So maybe 2-3 weeks (not sure when he starts counting those weeks - but that is ok). And he may do a bone marrow test before the 5 day treatment to see how well it has been working. They all feel that from mom's evaluations to date that it appears to be working and they probably want to know how well.

We know its the weekend, so her counts will go down - but since they were so high they may not get as low as they have been. And they will again rebound more quickly with all the new treatments continuing. So its exciting. Still can't give a day when she'll be home - but soon is expected. At best guess before the end of the month! So my hope - she's feeling well to come to the ultrasound (to be scheduled) at the end of the month. Get her first glimpse of her little Peanut as she had been calling the baby.

Baby side note - actually SAW it move last night! That was pretty darn cool! Its very faint - but saw it with my own eyes - rolling around on my belly.

Chemo DAy - hopefully last Friday

Good morning - well today "should" be mom's last Friday chemo treatment - lets hope! But things are starting to turn around for the good! We were very excited yesterday. Dad and I stopped by for a visit yesterday - mom was quite tired - she hadn't had much sleep over the previous few nights. One night she felt sick, the other was a problem with the lady across the hall - she did not want to be there.

Anyhow - as of yesterday her blood counts are really coming up! We are so happy! She didn't feel well because she has a stomach virus and they have her on medicine to get rid of that. But the blood counts coming up is great! WE know that they will go down after today - but hoping that maybe if they are up - they won't go down as far or that its a good sign that they will just continue to rebound next week. It appears this new daily chemo is working and they also gave her a shot to bring up the white cells on WEdnesday. They may give that again tomorrow.

She's a little scared to go home when they say she can. AFter going home after the gall bladder surgery - they totally missed the cancer at that time - I can't blame her. But we know the doctor will not release her until she is stong enough and we vow as a family to protect her and take care of her. So please - when she does come home - just know you need to call first. If we do not answer the phone know that is not a good day or time. Also - we will still have the family only rule for a while until mom is really back on her feet - this has nothing against all their great friends. This is only to protect mom and ensure she feels comfortable and gets her rest. WE will want her to build up her strength to continue this fight. Our family just asks that everyone respects these wishes.

Will update again this weekend - know mom will be tired after chemo today!

Latest update

Well heres another update on mom - she seems to be doing ok - noted this morning that she has a little stomach virus. So the doctors are giving her all sorts of fun medicine to "flush" it out. Sounds like fun huh? So she wasn't feeling so hot when we talked this morning.

Other than that - think Marcus and I (and dad of course) made her Tuesday when we were all there for a visit. Unfortunately, we missed dad - but Marcus and I were there together. We had a nice visit and even had mom laughing and embarassed (leave it to marcus). Ended up in the chapel probably on topics meant for any other room in the hospital. But it was fun.

It looks like mom's blood counts are slowly going up are at least the same - so that is good. They are having difficult time getting platelets to match and hte doctor is looking at some alternatives (even family members - unfortunately, I can not be considered because the baby needs any extra blood I have right now). So we are looking at those alternatives. Right now, it sounds like she's fine and gets her platelets from the biker dudes out in California. But the doctor would like to have a Plan B as Craig would say.

We are hoping to get her measurements and order her wig this weekend. She'll be happy to have that for a while. may even have it when she's in the hospital to feel a little better on the low days. Her 12 day treatments are going good so far - and just glad I can be there on those days still.

Dad and I are heading up to see her today - hopefully we'll get to pass each other for a few minutes this afternoon. Because of my office moving they are turning all computers & the network off at 3 pm today - so hopefully I can miss some of the traffic. AND I get tomorrow to work at home. So that will be a change of pace too - my feet and ankles are so swollen today - I really need to just relax.

Will keep everyone posted after the chemo tomorrow - hope to update this weekend. And thanks again to all those that are calling, sending cards, posting notes - mom loves them! She gets all excited about talkin to people. Please just understand that she may not remember things so well if she is on her medicine or exhausted.

happy news

Mom's doctor told her this morning that I will be able to visit her during the 12 day treatment because its not as strong of a chemo. However, the same rules for the Friday treatments is still in place. We will be carefuly still. Her doctor is actually more conservative than the OB - I figured we would go by the most conservative answers. So she's happy we can still see each other for the next few weeks.

Monday night clarification

ok - spoke to mom and dad tonight. The new medicine they started today is a 12 day treatment that they will put in her port (IV hook up). It is a chemo treatment - more mild than what she has been getting on MOndays. They say itshould help withher blood counts - so that is good. Unfortuantely - not sure if I can go see her for 12-13 days now. Which will SUCK. MOm and dad are going to check with the doctors - good thing for phones. Craig said he'd go and visit mom for me- what a sweet heart.

FAmily - please call mom first before you go and visit - so far she's doing very well. But with daily chemo - we are not sure how her counts will react - so we don't want any infections.

Friends and family - mom said to tell people to call her - she has had a lot of calls the last few days and enjoyed them tons. She's like people to continue to call if you can - it really perks her spirits. Just know if her throat or mouth are too sore - she may ask you to call back.

Keep the prayers going.

Monday Morning Update

Talked to mom briefly on the phone today - she sounds horrible, all the sores in her mouth and throat really are painful. so please be aware of this if you try and call her. She can talk - but its tough.

She is feeling good today - overall. Tired because the medicines from yesteday kept her up last night. Hopefully they can give her something to help sleep today.

Anyhow - her counts were up again today! Yeah! They are now changing some of her medicines and trying something new. From what someone mentioned earlier (a nurse I belive) what they want to try will help get her counts up and stay up. so they are testing it today to ensure no allergic reactions. Lets hope it works. If she can get through this Friday's chemo - then hopefully her counts will begin to rebound and stay up and she can come home! Keep fingers crossed - that will be great.

Weekend Update (mom and baby - probably a long post)

Hi all - just got home from my Sunday visit with mom. Was actually able to see Marcus, Dad and grandma all for a few minutes too. MOm was doing fairly well today -still has a hard time eating - but that's a normal side effect. I guess late last week they realized she had some sores in her mouth and throat - so that doesn't help matters either. Today the doctor mentioned some low grade fevers to keep an eye on - but they were not too worried. They are monitoring her all the time to ensuer she doesn't catch any infections - with her counts so low - it is very easy for her to get anything right now. So please - we still ask only family come to visit mom for now - call or post notes here or even send her cards - that will work well. And even when she comes home - we are still going to ask for family only until her counts are strong enough to have visitors - please understand its only because we love mom so much we want to keep her healthy that this has to be done. I know everyone loves her a lot too - and will want the same thing. Other than all that - mom is up and walking on her own now - so over all she's doing pretty darn good. They are going to be switching some of her medications this week to try and get her counts rebounding faster. WE hope in a few weeks she'll be home - and then she can see the next ultrasound of hte baby too!

Baby update - Craig can officially be a dad now (his words) - we passed our baby classes yesterday - so its official - we can be parents :-) Getting excited. I was able to return duplicate baby gifts yesterday and use the gift cards and money people gave us to get the things we really needed. WE now have a mattress and all the bedding for hte crib. Also the sheets for the bassinet (in the pack & Play) and covers for the changing table. NOw - the baby can do its normal new born things - poop and sleep - we have all the items it will need to start off with (I'm sure we'll be back and forth to the store every day when baby comes home - missing something).

Craig and his dad Ron are putting more of the furniture together right now - keeping my fingers crossed all the colors match. I'm off to finally get the overdue thank you cards done for my family baby shower and do much needed laundry.

Marcus was also able to visit mom today too - he's off playing golf this afternoon - wish him luck that he wins some cash to spend on his niece/nephew to be!

Comments to mom

Please remember that you can publish a comment to mom by clicking on "comment" at the end of any post! Then just do it anonymous - that works easiest from what we can tell. Just include your name in the message. But mom really enjoys knowing people can send her messages out there from all over. Craig prints them off and we bring them during our visits.

Keep the comments coming. We've had a few from some people - you can also click on "comment" at the end of the posts to see the comments other people have left for mom too.

Chemo Friday #3

Mom is having chemo today - its the 3rd Friday treatment. It looks like she will have 1 more Friday - next Friday. We anticipate she will be in the hospital until after that next treatment and her counts come up. Not exactly sure when the 5 day intensive treatment will begin - she may be in until after that as well. Its all dependant on her counts at this time.

I expect she'll be sleepin a lot this afternoon and just resting. Usually the treatments just wear her out and rest is what she needs most. So if you call - please don't be surprised at all. The answering machine is back up and running - so leave a message (she is not able to call out yet). She does like her calls and told me to remind people of that - her number is 734-712-1132. Just understand she may not be able to talk too long or may not be availalbe to talk right then. Just know even a message will brighten her day. She's been getting calls from my cousins and other relatives this week and its really brought her spirits up - you know who you are - THANKS!!! she was also happy to spend some time with Marcus last night too. He tried to get her some dinner but I guess they both had bad luck. She realized what she had was just too greasy and his I think just tasted horrible. the important thing was she was able to spend some alone time with her son.

Dad is with her today - he was able to be there before 7 am to see the doctor. The doctor is still very happy with mom's progress. He wishes her blood counts would rebound faster, but knows this happens with some patients - its still nothing to fret about right now. He has some other options he will be trying next week to help get them stable and in some balance (mostly the platelettes and the white cells). they mentioned something would probably be a medicine or drip for 12 days! Not exactly sure if I have the correct - will try and verify with the nurses this weekend.

Doctor is very happy to report that mom's liver looks like its getting better! And she hasn't had any fever or temperature yet. So that is very good news. He also belives the treatments are working - we just have to be patient with everything. I think we have been learing that everyday of this process - its a day by day thing to get through together.

I'm still being hopeful that if mom can't make it to the ultrasound at the end of June, she will be at the hospital for the baby's birth. My doctors say its not a problem for them - they just recommend mom's doctors approval. Mostly its important her white cells are high enough - we won't expose her to any virus or infection.

I'm not able to see mom until sunday - but will give another update later this weekend (maybe after my Sunday visit). But right now - know she's doing pretty darn good considering everything she's going through.

Mid-week update

Craig and I brought some dinner up to eat with mom today. Guess the few bites of soup she had were teh most she'd eaten all day. DAd was there all afternon and said she was feel sick most of the day. She seemed good when we were there.

Trying to boost her spirits - told her if she can get out by the end of the month she may be able to see the next ultrasound. So hopefully we can get to that point. I'd let both mom and dad come in. Dad's been hot on when we'll get pictures from another ultrasound since March. Also told them they will be Craig's assistants when the baby is born. We are only allowed 3 people - so they are the chosen ones.

Its getting late - I probably won't be back till Sunday - but I talked to her at least 2 times a day - Chemo is on Friday - I'll probably update then.

Baby Update

Good afternoon all - here is the latest Baby Update (I start visiting the doctore every 2 weeks for a month and then every week in July).

baby is doing good - with a very strong heart beat still. I'm doing good - only gained a total of 10 pounds so far during the entire pregnancy - so that is good too. Right now - it appears I'm carrying very high and getting very big. The doctor today (I finally met the last of the 4 doctors) said that he feels a very big baby and guesses it could be about 8 pounds when born. After all my crazy pregnancy thoughts - i was very pleased to hear its growing even if it is "big". its Still not a 10 pound baby! We'll be getting another ultrasound at the end of June to check the baby's size and hopefully it will be nice and let us see what the sex is.

The doctor was also able to answer a lot of questions and recommneded a company that we can use to collect the baby's cord blood. If needed, we will check to see if the baby's stem cells that are saved are a match to mom - so they can be used if the siblings are not a match. Or - we'll just save them for the baby's future. Learned in the last month you just never know when you will need something like this. But it sure would be cool if the baby's blood could save mom! What a connection the two would have!

Going to visit mom tonight and bring her dinner. She was all excited she saw Marcus last night and my cousin Freddy called to talk to her to. Between the two - they made her entire evening and today (and probably more)! She sure does love all of her family - she's the next "Aunt Stella"!

Tuesday, June 01, 2004

Another day

MOm sounded good today - and in good spirits. Craig and I will be bringing her up some dinner tomorrow - trying to get her to eat something right now. So if anyone has any recommendations on how to increase her appetite - let us know. Luckily - she hasn't been too sick - so that is good.

Mom was hoping Marcus could get up there today too - she looks forward to seeing her kids. She had fun talking baby stuff on the phone today - we decided to keep all baby duplicates and stuff out at her house so she'll have things there. So that works out perfect!

Things are crazy with life around here - so if you don't get daily updates - please understand. Plus - things just don't change that much.

Me - 3 more people put in resignations at work today. So if you know anyone in the Detroit area that is a head hunter, a consulting firm or even industry that may need an environmental person in Sept/Oct - please let me know. I'll be looking around that time.

Enjoy the shortened week.

Memorial Weekend Update

Happy Memorial day - hopefully people were able to enjoy family, some sunshine and a nice cook out. We were able to enjoy family and some sunshine. Next year - we'll cook out.

Mom is doing MUCH better today than she was over the weekend. Between the chemo on Friday and spraining her ankle (yes - its only a sprain and one that isn't too bad) her blood counts were very low. However, during my visit yesterday I was there when one of the doctors came in. She said that its expected that her counts will drop for a few days after chemo and that they will rebound. After many platelett and blood transfusions this weekend it seemed to do the trick. They were back up at very good levels today. They keep saying once they are up she can go home. However, we think with chemo once a week and them going down after the treatments - its better for her to stay there till its over. But we'll see. The nurses are very good to her - so that really helps. And she's been lucky to have family visiting during the week and on weekends. That keeps her spirits up too. The phone calls, letters and cards also help as well.

FYI - the answering machine is back and working as of this evening. But if you find it doesn't go on - just know mom just can't make it to the phone all the time or is out trying to walk around or someone has her out of the room.

Dad and I figured out this weekend they want her to hvae two more Friday's of chemo - so a total of 4 Fridays (2 more weeks of it) - the first Sunday didn't really count for one of the 4 treatments. Not sure how many weeks she'll be home before the 5 day intensive treatment.

MOm's ankle is also doing much better - she has a lot less pain in it now. So that is good too. Her spirits are getting back up - the weekend was rough - she just didn't feel well for most of it. Again - expected side effects - no food tastes good or even sounds good.

She's all excited because Marcus is coming to visit her tomorrow and I'll bring her some soup on WEdnesday for dinner. So far we've just happened to work it out that we are there on different days so that she has a visit almost every day.

Bare with her this week as her hair has started to fall out. She seems to have accepted that fact this will happen - but I can't even imagine the emotions she'll be having this week. I expect this to be a very emotional week for her. Please keep her in your prayers that her strength and blood counts continue to rise. Also pray that her doctors have the right treatments for her durning all of this.

As for me - not sure if Craig shared I had my first "practice" contractions last week. I know they are called Braxton Hicks - but I like my terminology a lot better - keeps me calmer. Baby is just moving all over a few times a day - I think if we catch it at the right time - we'd be able to really see the movements. Only one more week of baby classes - so that will be nice. And the nursery is on its way! Craig was a busy dad to be this weekend! We cleaned the carpets on the first floor, and he put the crib together. Now all we need is to hang the border and put the other pieces of furniture together. Then get the few final touches like a matress and the bedding. I ordered out stroller and had to break down and get more maternity clothes. I have been so lucky to be able to wear most of my normal pants and some of my sweaters to get me through to now. Also - my cousin was generous enough to let me have all her clothes too - that was a saving moment.

Marcus - he's busy getitng his house ready to put on the market and move. DAd was out there this weekend to help finish the painting. He's sure done a TON of improvements on the house - I'm sure it will be easy to sell. With his job - he'll probably be relocating closer to Howell.

That's about it - not too much news for a daily update - but at least enough for a few good posts a week.
Thanks for the prayers, support and calls - its so great to know how much people care!

Also - Keep the comments coming - mom is LOVING the comments Craig prints off to show her. We haven't shown her our posts yet - but I'm sure once she's home she'll get a kick otu of the whole thing.
Love you all,
The Wilcox/Backus gang

Twisted Ankle

Loretta didn't have a fun night last night. She fell
asleep in the conference room next to her own room and
got up too quick. She twisted her ankle and fell.
Her ankle has swollen up now and she'll need help
getting out of bed for the next couple of days. They
gave her some platelets as a precaution, but don't
think this should affect her overall treatment other
than having a sore ankle.

She didn't sleep very well last night, so Doug called
to give us the update and suggested that Gail might
call later this afternoon to see how she's doing.

The report we got at the end of the week was that
Loretta's white blood cells are still low which means
she's very susceptible to infection. This is why her
doctors have asked to keep visitors to family members
only. We certainly do appreciate your thoughts,
prayers and cards, but please wait until Loretta is
stronger and her immune system is built back up to
visit.

On another note, we're off this morning to our third
"birth awareness" class to get a tour of the facility
and the birthing rooms they have. There are 29
available! That's a lot of babies in one place!

It sounds like they've got a pretty good handle on
security and matching parents with the right baby so
we don't have to worry about coming home with the
wrong kid. Remember when all you had to worry about
was keeping the kid from eating rat poison? Now
there's hospitals switching babies, people
masquerading as nurses to steal babies and all kinds
of crazy stuff. Our nurse has already instructed us
to be very skeptical of anyone trying to take the baby
out of the room for any reason. I'm sure we'll get
more details on this today.

Thanks again for all of your support.

FWD: Mom update

RE: Mom update

Just a quick update on mom -
Dad got to the hospital early enough today to actually see and talk to the
doctor (he's usually in around 7 am or earlier). The doctor said he was
VERY HAPPY with how mom is coming along. That she is doing really well
compared to how she was when they first admitted her. He's still happy she
has not had any fevers or infections - so that is good news. And he feels
her liver is doing good too - so hopefully that means the cancer never did
spread there or if it did - the chemo is working on that.

Her counts are still going up - they are waiting on the white blood cells to
go up - because those help fight off infections. They are half way there -
but the chemo does kill the good cells. he doesn't seemed to worried
because everything else is going well. It just means she'll be in the
hospital longer. but heck - if she avoids any infections there that is good
- they can handle it so quickly compared to coming home. If she came home -
we may not realize it soon enough and set her treatments back a few weeks.
Mom just wants to come home and be healthy - so she'll stay if as long as
she needs to get into remission!

her spirits were up after talking to the doctor and they are giving her
chemo sometime this morning. So that is good - hopefully she'll continue to
have little side effects.

Have a great holiday weekend everyone

Gail's Home

This was Gail's last big trip for work, so she's glad to be done. Hopefully we can make some big progress with the nursery this weekend. We only have about 2 months to go!

There's not much new to report on Loretta. She remains at the hospital and will be there until her white blood counts exceed 1500. Evidently things have been moving in that direction, so perhaps soon. She's going to have another dose of chemo tomorrow. Gail's not supposed to see her for 24 hours after chemo to limit any potential exposure to the baby, so we'll probably plan to see her on Sunday. Gail did get to talk to Loretta for about an hour yesterday, so she was able to catch up on things. Marcus stopped up to see her tonight, and Doug is there every day. Doug has had the benefit of many home cooked meals from neighbors and church families, but I know he'll be glad to have Loretta back home even if they just have soup and sandwiches.

Enjoy your holiday weekend, and I'm sure we'll have more to report over the next couple of days.
